Seminar: How to De-plasticize Your Workplace & Optimize Recycling

Plastic has a new problem. It's called nanoplastic. And it's time we have a chat about it.

Join us during Plastic Free July as we share new data about plastic's toxifying effects and discuss how you can make a plan to transition out of it at your place of work. Plus, we'll give you our top tips on how to start and/or optimize an office recycling and composting program in this revelatory context on nanoplastics.

Hosted by Samantha and Brent of Hillside Solutions. We're the folks who helped Maha Festival reach its zero waste goal and set up successful composting programs at First National Bank Tower, Creighton University, and HDR.

You don't need to hire a full-time sustainability coordinator to help your office go green. We'll give you the playbook — for free!

Maha Music Festival

HARDLY ANYTHING MAKES IT FROM MAHA FESTIVAL TO THE LANDFILL.

“Zero waste” means more than 90% of trash is composted or responsibly recycled. Last year, the amount of trash saved from the landfill would have filled 118 XL trash bags.

At Maha, you’ll find four-stream Zero Waste Stations throughout the festival, including regular trash bins and these three:

Compost: Food scraps and even some utensils and cups will be transformed back into soil at an industrial composting site down the street. In 2022, we did this with 1,405 pounds of waste.

Recycling: Aluminum cans, plastic cups, and so on.

Hefty ReNew™ bags: For the stuff that’s hard to recycle at most facilities, like candy wrappers and chip bags.

You’ll also see vendors using compostable or recyclable materials.

You’ll see our dedicated team from Hillside Solutions. (Check out the behind-the-scenes mini-doc about how we almost missed the mark last year.)

But the biggest thing you’ll notice is that the Zero Waste Stations have a friendly and knowledgeable volunteer monitoring each one. This is key to making sure nothing gets mixed up or contaminated. Without these volunteers, zero waste at Maha would not be possible.

WANT TO BE A ZERO WASTE MONITOR?

It’s easy — we’ll provide training on everything you need to know. All you need to do is chill at your Zero Waste Station for a few hours (under an umbrella for shade!) and guide attendees on which bin to use if they’re unsure.

In exchange, you’ll earn a free two-day Maha Festival ticket (valued at $100+).

Sign up for a Zero Waste Monitor shift by April 30 and be entered to win a Zero Waste Hero prize package! Includes:

A year-long subscription to the Hillside Solutions Compost Club (valued at $107.88), making composting at home extremely easy for Omaha-area residents. And, you get free soil in exchange. Learn more about the Compost Club here.

How You Can Join Omaha’s Circular Food Movement

What’s Happening?

Millwork Conversations is a late afternoon chat between Omaha’s creators, innovators, artists, thought leaders and activators. Millwork Conversations will provide an opportunity to learn from people across communities right here in Nebraska and across the country about new ideas and what’s possible – how to push past real and imagined boundaries. Each month will provide an inspiring, memorable experience for attendees through compelling conversations.

Joining us this month is Conversation Leader, Brent Crampton...

Brent Crampton is the Director of Partnerships with Hillside Solutions. He spends his days helping organizations transition out of the landfilling model and into the forthcoming zero waste age. Specifically there’s a lot of misconceptions of how recycling, composting, and landfilling work. He pulls back the curtain to reveal the truth and inspire action.

How You Can Join Omaha’s Circular Food Movement
Our food & waste management systems are broken. They are a consequence of our Western ideology that views the world from a linear perspective. But the future will be based in the ancient, indigenous ideology of circular thinking.

The good news is that the circular food movement in Omaha is alive and growing. Come to discover how you can break free from the take-make-waste model of the twentieth century. And what you can do today to participate in the solution.

4:30pm | Doors Open

4:45pm | Conversation Kick Off!

5:15pm | Q&A

5:30pm | Stick Around for a Social Hour with us in Kros Strain Draft Works

*Kros Strain's new Draft Works location is right next to us in The Dock at Millwork Commons! PLUS if you're ready to keep your brain moving, you can join in on Trivia Night starting at 6:30pm!
