EnergyBag to Lumber Update
Next summer’s deck remodel could be made of the plastic you recycle today. That’s because First Star Recycling, the Omaha recycling hub that oversees the EnergyBag program, has begun talking about using EnergyBag material for plastic lumber.
This will be a significant shift from its original use when it was burned at a cement kiln, and more recently used as a substitute for fossil fuels in AG diesel.
While a Canadian company is currently making this plastic lumber, President & CEO of First Star Dale Gubbels told us there’s plans to expand First Star’s Omaha site to process EnergyBag material and produce the plastic lumber locally. That could happen as soon as next summer.
While this will be a game changer for the credibility of the program for sustainability advocates, we still recommend that people move away from single-use materials whenever possible.
We’ll update our blog as things develop.
