Maha Festival Hits “Zero Waste” Goal (Again!)
We did it. We did it again!
"Last year, we made history by being the state of Nebraska's first zero-waste music festival, and we're making it a tradition." - Director of Partnerships, Brent Crampton
Powered by sustainability sponsor OPPD, Maha's kick-butt volunteers, our waste management team at Hillside Solutions, and all the fantastic participants who put their trash in the correct bin - Maha Music Festival hit their zero waste goal for a second time! Watch our Zero Waste Music Festival Re-cap Til Tok Here.
Stats to Prove It
♻️ 2,543 pounds were saved from a landfill by composting or recycling — 94% of the total on-site waste
♻️ 9,600+ plastic water bottles never even used, thanks to everyone who filled up at the FNBO Free Water Stations
♻️ 98 recycling volunteers made it all happen (shoutout to LinkedIn for helping!)
What does zero waste mean?
"Zero waste" means only 10% of waste goes to the landfill and 90% is composted or recycled. In 2023, only two trash bags were sent to the dump.
Zero Waste Stations
We create "zero waste stations" with four steams throughout the festival:
Hefty ReNew™ bags: For hand-to-recycle plastics, like chip bags
Single-Stream Recycling: Plastic cups, aluminum cans, cardboard/paper, etc.
Compost: Food waste and other organic materials will be transformed into nutrient-dense soil.
Landfill: For everything else
Our team works with vendors to ensure the use of compostable or recycled materials.
What is the biggest takeaway for Zero Waste Stations? Our friendly and knowledgeable monitors help make sure nothing gets contaminated. They receive gloves and a "claw" to reach the bins when an item is wrongly placed.
Want to be a zero-waste monitor? 💪
It's easy - our team helps train you on everything you need to know. All you need to do is hang out at your Zero Waste Station for a few hours and guide guests on which bin to use. In exchange, you'll receive a free two-day Maha Music Festival ticket (valued at over $100 bucks).
Hear from Brent and Maha with some behind-the-scenes of what it takes to make an event zero waste.
What’s next?
Word on the street - Maha Festival will return to Omaha’s Riverfront in 2024. Bigger the space = bigger waste! No fear - our team’s ready to crush our zero waste goal.
